With the purpose of deepening bi-regional cooperation between the European Union and Latin America, Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, met with accredited ambassadors to the Slovak Republic from countries belonging to CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) today (28 February 2018).

Parízek spoke with the ambassadors about the priorities and challenges of the Slovak Republic’s foreign policy in the upcoming period (Slovakia´s membership in the UN Human Rights Council for 2018-2020 as well as its Presidencies in the V4 since July 2018, in the Forum for Security Co-Operation and the OSCE Mediterranean Contact Group in 2018, as well as its OSCE Chairmanship from 2019). In the discussion they also delved into the current state of bilateral relations and exchanged views on the opportunities and perspectives of political, economic, cultural and educational cooperation, especially in the context of the preparations for the EU-CELAC ministerial summit to be held on 16-17 July 2018 in Brussels. “We have agreed with the accredited ambassadors from Latin America and the Caribbean to the Slovak Republic that there is scope for extending and deepening the cooperation in all these areas, as well as that it is necessary to collaborate intensively and especially jointly," explained State Secretary Parízek.

State Secretary Parízek recalled the increasing importance of this region as a strategic partner of the EU, which is also attested to by the increased interest in the bi-regional political dialogue and in deepening the cooperation not only bilaterally but also when looking for joint solutions to global challenges at multilateral forums (migration, the refugee crisis, the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking, climate change, security of citizens, and protection of the peace).
